Scions of the Heike, who hid themselves deep in the interior of Kumano, started weaving hats using fragrant Hinoki (Japanese cypress) which grew around that area. This hat became popular among pilgrims to Kumano, and took its name from its birthplace in Minachi. Today, this tradition is kept alive by the hands of skilled craftsmen.
