Naniwa Bekka

The technique of tortoiseshell work was introduced to Nagasaki from China at the beginning of the Edo period and later to Osaka and Edo (Tokyo).
One of the three largest centers for tortoiseshell work, Osaka's main products are accessories made with fine carving techniques such as openwork.
To continue these traditional techniques, work is now going on to develop a new material to replace tortoiseshell.
